Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF)

Who is this qualification for?
This qualification is aimed at learners who wish to become emergency first-aiders in the workplace. This qualification meets the requirements for training emergency first-aiders in those organisations that have identified that staff members need to be trained to this level within their first-aid needs assessment.

How long will it take?
To complete this qualification, learners should expect to undertake 7 hours (1-day course) of learning, typically over one day, with a minimum contact time of 6 hours.

Topics covered
The qualification covers knowledge such as the roles and responsibilities of the first aider and how to assess an incident. The qualification also covers first aid skills in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), providing first aid to a casualty who is choking and dealing with external bleeding and hypovolaemic shock. In line with guidance provided by the HSE, the qualification supports/approves work place emergency first aiders for a period of 3 years, after which point learners will need to retake the course. In addition to this, it is recommended that learners refresh their knowledge annually.

Qualification specification
To obtain a Level 2 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF), attend a training course for a minimum of 6 contact hours, excluding breaks, and pass the examination.

Assessment method
This qualification is assessed by a practical assessment and multiple-choice theory assessment

Condition of Entry
Learners will need to be aged 14 and, whatever their age, are physically capable of completing the practical assessment. Learners must have a basic knowledge and minimum of Level 1 in English skills before enrolment.

Progression opportunities
On successful completion of this qualification, learners may wish to continue their development by undertaking one of the following qualifications:

  • Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work
  • Level 3 Award in First Aid Response
  • Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid

Level 2 Award for Security Officers in the Private Security Industry (Top Up) (QCF)

As a result of changes by the Security Industry Authority (SIA) from 1st October 2021, security officers who wish to renew their licences are required to undergo additional training (Top Up).

Qualification overview and objective
The objective of this qualification is to support a role in the workplace. It is designed for learners who currently hold a licence from the Security Industry Authority (SIA) to work as a security officer and need to be brought up to date with the new licence-linked qualifications requirements.

How long will it take?
To complete and gain this qualification, and in order to renew a license, learners are expected to undertake approximately 4 hours of learning. The SIA have stated that the training, delivery and assessment of this qualification must take place over a minimum of 0.5 days (50 minutes if self-study is used, or 4 hours if self-study is not used).

Entry requirements
To register for this qualification, learners must be aged 16-17 but an SIA licence cannot be applied for until the age of 18. Learners will need to show that they hold a current and valid First Aid or Emergency First Aid certificate that meets the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. It is an SIA requirement that training centres must confirm that each learner is sufficiently qualified in First Aid or Emergency First Aid.

Learners should present their First Aid or Emergency First Aid certificate before they start training. This certificate must be valid for at least 12 months from the course starts date.

Structure of Course
The SIA and Awarding Bodies have “recognised that there is some learning that contributes to the achievement of the licence-linked qualifications that can be delivered by self-study/distance learning”. As such, to complete the Level 2 Award for Security Officers in the Private Security Industry (Top Up), learners must complete all units contained within the following mandatory group.

  • Unit/Module 1: Principles of Terror Threat Awareness in the Private Security Industry of the course will be delivered by the use of self-study (authorised ACT E-learning). Link to access (https://ct.highfieldelearning.com/) contents for this unit/module are emailed to candidates prior to starting the course. The materials used clearly show learners, how many hours (1 hour and 40 minutes) of learning they are expected to undertake and are given sufficient time to allow them to complete it before their course begins. On completion, Learners are expected to email their ACT E-learning certificate to the centre prior to starting the course. It is also a requirement that the centre checks these during training to ensure appropriate learning has occurred. This will be quality assured through Highfield’s external quality assurance processes. The learners should ask the tutor/trainer any related questions as deemed fit each day and for the duration of the course.
  • Unit/Module 2: Principles of Minimising Personal Risk for Security Officers in the Private Security Industry unit of the course will be delivered by the use of selfstudy. Materials for this unit/module are emailed to candidates prior to starting the course. The materials used clearly show learners, how many hours (1 hour and 30 minutes) of learning they are expected to undertake and that they are given sufficient time to allow them to complete it before their course begins. Learners are expected to email their Completed Workbook to the centre prior to starting the course. It is also a requirement that the centre checks these during training to ensure appropriate learning has occurred. This will be quality assured through Highfield’s external quality assurance processes. The learners should ask the tutor/trainer any related questions as deemed fit each day and for the duration of the course.

These examinations must be taken to complete your course work requirement.

There are no prerequisites for attending this course. However, it is advised that learners should have a minimum of Level 1 in literacy or numeracy or equivalent. Learners will be required to undertake an initial literacy assessment prior to enrolment to the course.

Important note: There are no RPL opportunities for old units (linked with historic security qualifications) that will allow for certification of the above qualification. Therefore, all units linked to this qualification must be completed in full for a learner to be awarded it.
